Abstract: A person is not born with a sense of self. It takes many years of maturation before full adult self-awareness comes into being. As people develop self-awareness, they formulate a self-conception and build processes through which they derive conclusions about their self-esteem. There are several basic processes of self-esteem development. Notions of competency and self-efficacy are closely related to self-esteem. For a successful adaptation in a society, an individual needs objective competency (knowledge, capabilities, skills) and subjective perceptions of own competency, which depends on the person's cognitive interpretations to a large degree. There are many pathways to self-esteem. It doesn't develop overnight. Self-esteem is built gradually through a willingness to work on a number of areas in your life.
